Academic Competition Day Details: There is a dress code for this day. Students should be dressed nicely in competition-appropriate clothing. NO flip-flops, t-shirts, hats (unless part of drama competition) or jeans. - Lunch and snack items will be available in the Study Hall for a small fee.
- Check in time is 8:30 a.m.. The competitions begin at 9 a.m. and will be over by 2:30.
- Students will sign up to compete in five events. Events shaded in green below are prepared at home and may not be counted among the five for the day. In between events, students will observe other competitions.
- Students may not enter more than two events in one subject area.
- Registration is online. Click on the button at left to fill out the form. They are due March 4. BEGIN TO PREPARE NOW!

ART COMPETITIONS |
ART Ages 8 - 18 | Art of any medium can be entered. Pictures must be mounted on a colored piece of construction paper. Two pieces of art may be submitted. Judging groups are: 6-8 year olds; 9-11 year olds; 12-14 year olds and 15 and up. Art may not be included as one of the five academic competition entries. | Judging will be done on the competition day by one or more established artists. |
ENGLISH COMPETITIONS |
POETRY Middle School Grades 5-6 and 7-8 | Students will be writing Free Verse poetry. - Grades 5-6 will write 10-12 lines about family, pets, or holidays.
- Grades 7-8 will write 12-16 lines about school, friendships, or sports.
- High School students will write 15-20 lines about the future: dreams, goals, hopes, and/or careers, being sure to include the part motivation plays with these topics in your life.

DRAMATIC PRESENTATIONS Monologues or two-person scenes, Grades 7-12 | In this competition, you (or you and a partner) will be memorizing and performing a monologue or two-person scene from a play, movie, or book. TIMED READING Comprehension Grades 5-6; 7-8; 9-12 | In this competition students will be asked to read several passages and then answer some questions about each passage. Click here for more details. SPEECH High School Extemporaneous Grades 8-12 | Students will be given the choice of two topics. They then have three minutes to outline some ideas to present. Topics are relevant to teens today. Middle School SPELLING Bee Grades 5-6; 7-8; 9-12 | Age appropriate words will be used for this competition. For a spelling list, click here. Words will be written on a personal-size dry-erase board. This is a written, not oral spelling bee. | Students are out when they get three words wrong. |
SPEECH - Original Oratory Grades 6-7 Grades 8-9 Grades 10-12 | Topic: Students will present a character sketch of a famous (nationally recognized) person. Participants will be allowed two visual aids (some restrictions) and must submit two sources (at least one non-internet). STORY TELLING Middle School Grade 6-7 | Students in this grade will be picking an exciting Biblical story to retell. You may embellish the story some, but never to the point that you change the story or imply truths in the story that are not clear in the original Biblical story. VOCABULARY Grades 6-8; Grades 9-12 | Students will be taking one to three written multiple choice tests which will include age-appropriate words. Top students on each test will go on to the final test. | Allow 20 min. per test; Three sections with elimination. |

SCIENCE PAPER PLANES Middle School and High School | Students will build a paper airplane from the provided paper. The plane will be judged by the longest flight time when launched by hand from the floor. Best of 3 tries per plane. No more than 3 planes per student. | Approximately 20 min. |
SCIENCE STRAW TOWERS Middle School and High School | Students will be given an opportunity during the competition to build a straw tower for height using no more than 100 paper straws and no more than 3 feet of clear tape. MATH Math Facts Speed Tests Grades 4-5 Grades 6-8 Parents | Students will be taking timed math tests which will include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Allow 15 minutes for this drop in event. May be split up during the day. Prior first-place winners in each age category may not compete again in that category. | Grades 4-5: 4 minutes each test (4 tests, +, -, x, ÷) Grades 6-adult: 2 minutes each test. |

GEOGRAPHY Middle School Grades 5-6 -and 7-8 | Competitors will be matching names to locations on a map.
