Shaya Greathouse Years or the last year attended ZLO:Fall 2001-Spring 2004. Education since ZLO: I started attending Whatcom Community College Fall 2004 through the Running Start program. I have been going there full time and will be graduating with an Associates Degree this spring ('06). In addition, I will be graduating with Honors and as a Phi Theta Kappa member. Highlights of things you've done since ZLO: I have become very involved at Whatcom and have joined the chamber choir there; worked as a Student Leader on campus, where I spoke on a panel, helped at an information desk, and lead tours for new Running Start students; and became a hired singer of the National Anthem for the 2005 graduations and the women's basketball games. Also, this year I was chosen as one of two representatives from Whatcom to receive a scholarship and go to a ceremony in Olympia for representatives from all over the state with high academic records, community service, and leadership skills. Aside from Whatcom, I am also continuing to take voice lessons, and I have had many opportunities to sing in state and local competitions and recitals. I am also a member of the Bellingham Chamber Chorale. This Fall (2006) I will attend Biola University in Southern California as a vocal performance major and an honors student. What influence, if any, ZLO has had for you? When I tested into Running Start at Whatcom, I was able to easily enter higher-level pre-calculus and english composition classes and have been able to succeed in all my classes, whether taking tests, writing papers or term projects, doing experiments, or organizing my work. I could not have accomplished any of this if I had not gone to ZLO. The teachers at ZLO are wonderful and were able to help me not only thoroughly learn each subject, but also helped me prepare for college-level work and subjects. Furthermore, I learned to be independent, organized, and efficient while attending ZLO. I loved the personal setting of ZLO, the fun and challenging teachers, and the biblical perspective. Also, I met many great people at ZLO, most of whom are still close friends. Favorite memory of ZLO: I have so many wonderful memories of ZLO and I liked all my instructors. One great memory was during my first semester at ZLO. I was taking Toria Bash's Intro to Chemistry and Physics class, and our class took a field trip to Mt. St. Helens that Fall. We spent a night in tents at a campground there, where Mrs. Bash tried crazy experiments with the camp food and we all played group games late into the night. The next day we visited the tourist centers and took a LONG hike on a trail near the foot of the mountain. I loved listening to Mrs. Bash's spirited scientific explanations of things we'd see, and it was so fun bonding with the people in my class. As for instructors, I could say something good about each one. Each had a passion for teaching and for their subject, and each used creative methods that made each class relevant, fun, and interactive. All of the teachers also cared about every individual student and did all they could to be supportive and help each student succeed. | ||
