Andrew Nelson

Years or the last year attended ZLO: 1997-2002

Education since ZLO Since my time at ZLO I have studied at the WCC and The Colorado College where I received my BA in Geology I the spring of 2007.  I have also studied (for a very shout period) at University of the Nations in Kona, HI.  My course of study at CC has been varied and interesting, involving significant work in Geology (Naturally) Ecology and Environmental Science.

Highlights of things you've done since ZLO:

Highlights of this experience have involved my senior thesis research, a biology course in Patagonia, research on stream geomorphology and tectonics on the front range of Colorado and Wyoming, and the vast number of field experiences in Geology classes at The Colorado College.  My thesis research was an exploration of bioluminescent bays on Vieques, PR.  I explored the interactions of ecological communities, sediment and water geochemistry, and bay morphology.  (Photo below shows Cerro Fitzroy, Patagonia, Argentina in the background.)

I am also happy to report that I, as of July 20th 2007, am married.  My wife is Rachel Nelson (formerly Huffman) who is finishing her studies in Music and Education at CC.  She loves birds, particularly ducks, particularly Rouen Ducks and is a more amazing woman then any man deserves.

What influence, if any, ZLO has had for you? Though it may seem obvious, my time at ZA, particularly coursers with Toria Bash have deeply influenced my academic trajectory.  Mrs. Bash’s enthusiastic teaching of the natural sciences contagiously infected my thoughts on the subjects.

As of fall 2008 I am starting work on my master’s degree at the University of British Columbia where I will be studying Physical Geography, specifically in the area of fluvial geomorphology.

Memories: I was at a lunch table and looked up to see that all 6 or 8 of us seated around it were eating a cucumber like a banana!
