Major countries and continents are explored and mapped systematically, region- by -region. Primary emphasis is on place and location of major physical features and political entities (countries and major cities). Time allowing, we will also look at some of the human aspects of place (language, religion, government, etc.) and the relationship of geography to cultures in general. Students will assimilate this knowledge through a variety of methods including mapping, activities, games, video media, research and reporting, and the "World Memory Map" project (end of year culminating activity).

Early civilization through the 20th century. Study of the ancient world is integrated with the biblical record and development of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Historical development of civilizations around the globe is related to current world events. Emphasis on developing individual study skills, test-taking skills, research and presentation. This is more than learning dates and facts. It is an interactive course that involves students in the hows, what ifs, and what difference it makes in the world today.

This course is good preparation for US History and all other social studies courses.

US History / Civics

This class covers the key time periods of American History and our government.  Students will have reading,  written and oral reports, and will be involved in classroom discussions.  Mrs. Miller has divided this class into units based upon changing periods in American History and then she has used creative maps for each period for easy recall.   This class will build a student's knowledge of our nation's history  as well as give an opportunity to develop/utilize many English skills.  Civics will be a major part of the curriculum first semester.

Comparative Religions Fall semester

Emphasis is on the development and belief systems of Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Field trip includes Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh temples, Islamic mosque, and Jewish synagogue. Discussion includes: 1) each religion's influence on history and current events, 2) each religion's influence in America, and 3) how each non-Christian religion deviates from Biblical truth.

All of these religions are active in our local area, as well as on the world scene. Understanding them has become a necessity! Comparative Philosophies/Worldviews is a good follow-up course for 2nd semester.

Comparative Philosophies: Worldviews in Conflict Spring Semester

Emphasis is on analyzing dominant worldviews (Secular Humanism, Marxism, Cosmic Humanism, and Biblical Christian) and their roles in contemporary issues, springing from their respective theological/philosophical foundations, their understanding of humanity, ethics, sociology, law, and economics. The intent of the course is to equip the student to face intellectual challenges to the Christian worldview, to make the connection between ideas and consequences on a national and global scale, and to understand short-term vs. long-term outcomes in the current milieu of shifting power bases.

This course is excellent preparation for the college-bound student in: 1) critical thinking skills, and 2) knowledge of conflicting worldviews they will encounter in college classrooms and textbooks.
