Learn to play a band instrument. I prefer to limit beginning students to these instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone. Students wishing to play percussion should begin on another instrument, or take piano lessons privately for the first year.

Students will need to find or rent their own horn. Horns dug out of closets need to have maintenance performed on them. I can recommend a service. Students will need to purchase the beginning band book, Essential Elements 2000. These may be purchased wherever band insruments are sold or rented. Please purchase them together with practice DVD's for your horn.

By Christmas time we will be playing carols. The focus of the rest of the year will include children's songs, campfire songs, simple popular Christian hits and the fundamentals needed to begin leading worship.

Acoustic instruments only.

If you've played an instrument for a year or more, then this is the place to improve your skills. Skill levels will vary, but this small group setting will improve everyone's skills in reading, technique, interpretation, music theory, and perhaps even improvising and composition. We will include every genre possible from classical to fiddle to jazz. Every student will be expected to perform at the San Juan Music Educator's Solo and Ensemble contests appropriate for your age level which takes place here at a public school in Whatcom County. If we have enough performers, we will also perform at the large group festivals. We will also perform a concert for our families each semester which will include solo and ensemble work. The grade will depend on skills achieved, concert attendance, outside concert attendance, practice records and some music theory work.

High school band students are encouraged to join either Ferndale High School or Bellingham High School's marching band during the fall season. Practice for this may begin APRIL prior to the Fall marching season. Please check with Mrs. Crocker for how to contact the band directors for those groups.

Note: You must provide your own horn. Be sure maintenance on your horn has been performed this summer, BEFORE band begins in the fall
