Gr K-2

Semester Course Fee: $150
Materials Fee:
$25.

Course length: 2 - 4 semesters
Min/Max enrollment:

Students will begin to dabble into some math including number recognition, counting, patterns and beyond, using fun and creative projects and activities. May move into some early addition and subtraction after someassessment of where the students are at. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. A few younger siblings crawling around on the floor are just fine.

Course Title: Fun With Math
Instructor: Melissa Stoebe
Grade Level:
Gr 2-4 and Grades 4-6

Semester Course Fee: $150
Materials Fee:
$25.

Course length: 2 - 4 semesters
Min/Max enrollment:
4/10

Students will learn through fun games and activities the basics of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, money, etc…) that will help them with their math curriculum at home and future math classes. A solid foundation of math facts and math skills is the way to succeed in upper math classes (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, etc.) so we will work on cementing those skills.

MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL:

General Math
Instructor: Bash
Grade Level:
G4 5 and up

Semester Course Fee: $300
Materials Fee:
$25, text included. Calculator also required (TI-30xIIs is recommended, about $15).

Course length: 2-4 semesters
Min/Max enrollment:
5/10

Students will refine their skills using the basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Opportunities will be provided to acquire and manipulate metric and standard measurements. Basic geometry including perimeter, area, and volume of basic geometric figures will be taught. Radius, circumference, and area of circle and volume of cylinders and spheres are covered. Negative numbers are introduced. Problem solving strategies and mental math techniques will be actively taught. Students will practice constructing and reading various types of graphs. Applications from cooking, finance, science, and art will be included. Each student will be individually assessed and given homework which is appropriate to their current level of understanding and achievement. Students usually take from one to two years to complete this course of study.

The basic purposes of the general math class (unless otherwise agreed upon by the parents and the teacher) are to prepare the student for pre-algebra or algebra, and to provide them with the necessary math skills to meet the demands of everyday situations. This process includes insuring that the student has mastered basic math skills. In summary, this class is the last one in which the aim is to fill in any missing basic concepts and skills. Mastery of these will be assumed in all higher level math classes.

Pre Req: Ability to add and subtract double digit numbers, ability to multiply with single digits.

Pre-algebra
Instructor: Bash
Grade Level:
For students one year away from Algebra

Semester Course Fee: $300
Materials Fee:

Pre-Algebra as a full-year course covers all operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals with positive and negative numbers; percents; fundamentals of exponents and scientific notation; irrational numbers; ratio and proportion; probability; an introduction to geometric figures and formulae; measurement; square roots and the Pythagorean theorem; possibly trigonometric ratios; statistics; and fundamental operations with monomials. Students are taught the proper use of a calculator as well as the strategies of mental math and math shortcuts.

The course is enhanced with applications of mathematics. This could include finance, art, architecture, the stock market, and data gathering. Students are also encouraged to explore everyday math problems such as how much a meal costs, figuring mileage on a car, and fundamental financial record keeping.

Pre Req: General Math. A diagnostic test is available for placement.
Fulfills: One year (1 credit) of high school math if taken in grades 9 - 11

HIGH SCHOOL
A note about Algebra and 8th graders: We find we are more often regretting putting 8th graders into the full-paced algebra class. Algebra is not only a cognitive leap for most students, but the pace of the homework can be a surprise as well. Eighth graders in full-paced Algebra are getting B's and C's, while eighth graders in Decompressed Algebra are getting B's and A's. A good GPA opens doors for students. For that reason, we are recommending that ALL 8th graders planning to take algebra enroll in Decompressed Algebra, unless there is a really good reason for promoting the student to Full Algebra. Discuss it with the instructor.. With great preparation, we are able to condense much of the review that goes on in 2nd year algebra, so that students finishing our 2nd Year Algebra/PreCalculus year need only Trigonometry as preparation for Calculus. In other words, the student who finishes Algebra in grade 9 and continues with math at ZLO could have a quarter or two of calculus under their belt before finishing high school. At minimum, we would like to see every high school student finish Geometry.

"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious." -Albert Einstein

Students will "DISCOVER" mathematical knowledge through exploration of design, construction, sports, electricity, play, field trips, games, and the use of many different types of tools. They will be given a problem that first, they have to figure out how to solve, and then actually solve the problem with some guidance and gentle nudges along the way.

Decompressed Algebra is Algebra spread across two years. Decompressed algebra is a popular ZA course! I love teaching this class! We have brought more students through Algebra via the Decompressed sequence than we have the regular single-year of Algebra. (See note above about 8th graders and Algebra.)

Students who are highly successful at mathematics are usually visual learners, learning easily by examples worked by the instructor or in a book. This course is for the auditory and kinesthetic learners on the high school level, and also for those younger students (6th and 7th graders) who may cognitively be ready for algebra but may not be able to handle the pace of a full algebra class. Parents or other adults with math anxiety are also welcome! Basic skills will be reviewed often, and the course will be supplemented with hands-on activities.

Students should expect 5 - 8 hours of homework per week.

Pre Req: Completion of E book in General Math, or Pre-Algebra. A placement test is available.
Fulfills: Some high schools may grant 1 credit for each year of this course, but the content only covers half of standard high school algebra each year.
