This class is designed to introduce children to the wonderful world of reading and writing. We will unlock the doors to reading and find great wonders there. We will open the avenues of phonetically vowel and consonant sounds of the alphabet and proceed to form basic words to introduce parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Along this path, we will learn to create sentences and look for main ideas in writing and reading. We will sharpen our comprehension skills and then find ways to understand the ideas that are presented. We will have opportunities to express ourselves in creative writing and class discussions. |

This class paves the way for opening curiosity to reading that is more advanced. We will practice comprehension skills, critical thinking strategies, and arrange thoughts in order through fun ways and exercises. We will analyze short stories and predict the outcomes. Building on the former skills in phonics, we undertake blends, plurals, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, and antonyms. We will launch writing ideas in journal writing and short stories and continue to encourage class discussions. We will also express thoughts in creative writing with a beginning level of evaluation of the skills used in their written work. |

Continuing the adventure in learning language Arts, this class will advance to reading and vocabulary with meaning and excitement through various thought-filled, critical thinking topics, stories, and novels. In writing, sentence structure and paragraph building will be learned, evaluated, and edited. More exposure will be given to types of writing such as opinion, definition, descriptive, and narrative. Through diagramming sentences, the students will learn new and challenging ways to understand the structure of sentences. This practice will be beneficial and a basis for learning a foreign language. An intense study of grammar is fundamental to this class as grammar is the root for the study of languages. Class discussion will continue to be encouraged. |

This class "jumpstarts" students (helping them to catch up or move ahead) to be prepared for their next level of English class. It is a full-range English course with reading exciting novels, building reading comprehension, learning organized and creative writing skills, building grammar skills, and being involved with a special spelling program as well as a vocabulary program. Students will create a "ME" book first semester which is an exciting project. Beware! After taking this class, most students acquire a new love for reading and writing. Pre Req: None Prepares students for Middle School Introduction to English (with Mrs. Kink) or Focus English (with Mrs. Miller). |

Middle school is a time to get serious about Language Arts by surveying its full content of skills while enhancing the appreciation for literary classics and the art of writing. This class is an introduction to the literature elements as applied to novels, short stories, biographies, plays, and poems. These studies will serve as the major focus for student writing assignments and presentations. To build a strong academic foundation, the writing lessons for the year will include more than 20 forms of writing such as biography, narrative, comparison, creative, descriptive, 5-paragraph essay, short stories, reports, and poetry. Instruction on parts of speech, grammar, mechanics, editing, and sentence structure will be sequential through the year. Pre Req: Reading on or above grade level. Not open to students younger than 6th grade level. This course is a pre-requisite for Advanced Middle School Literature and Writing |

Advance Middle School Literature and Writing Instructor: Kink Grade Level 7-9 | Semester Course Fee: $300 Materials Fee: $30 | Course length: 2 semesters Min/Max enrollment:4/10 |
This course is "high school prep." Besides polishing literature and writing skills, these middle schoolers will be encouraged to stretch and mature in these skills. Students will also be expected to actively participate in classroom discussions and writings based on assigned readings of short stories, biographies, Biblical events, novels, plays, and poetry. The selections will stimulate analysis of character development using themes such as truth, wisdom, courage, humility, and justice. Various forms of writing will demonstrate application of literary elements and vocabulary, critical thinking skills, research skills, outlining, essay form and content, clarity, and grammar usage. Rounding out the year will be sentence diagraming, the study of Greek and Latin roots, explication of poetry, oral presentations, and field trips. Pre Req: Reading on or above grade level and have mastered an introductory level of literature, grammar, and writing. |

In this class, we FOCUS on the important skills needed to advance to higher level English skills. Writing takes top priority with emphasis on the basic writing skills while moving to more advanced skills to provide a solid foundation for students. We also work on reading comprehension and an excitement and love of reading often results with the methods we use! Included in the curriculum is a special personalized spelling program, grammar review, vocabulary, and skills for improving reading levels. Students will learn journalistic skills first semester to create their own magazines, as well a narrative writing and essay writing. Then, second semester they will be learning to write a research paper. Beware! After taking this class, most students acquire a new love for reading and writing! Pre Req: None (High School students who take this class need a "catch-up" time before approaching a solid high school curriculum. Middle school students who take this class will receive a solid foundation to jump them ahead in their English skills. This class is designed to challenge any learner at any level.) This class prepares students to go on to High School Concepts, to Mrs. Kink's English classes or other classes as deemed appropriate by the teacher. Some students grow as much as two or three grade levels and so many different classes will open up for them! |

This class presents a multi-focused language arts program which builds a foundation for student skills to move them on in the process to go to college or the technical school. This course includes: - Reading - novels, short stories and research information
- Writing - Learning skills to write a strong paragraph leading to a well-developed essay, and researching a complete project. Writing from literature, analytical thinking, group discussions and poetry are also a part of the curriculum.
- Vocabulary - Based on Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes preparing a student for the PSAT or the Running Start test.
- Spelling- A personal and individualized program based upon a student's own needs
- Communication -Skill building in the organization of written and oral communication techniques.
- College Course and Entrance Testing preparation.This well-rounded curriculum provides a strong foundation as well as a challenge to students at all levels.
PreReq. Mrs. Kink's English course(s) or Mrs. Miller's Focus English course OR a paragraph assessing the student's skill levels for proper placement in our ZLO courses. Notes: This course prepares students to go on to the American Literature and College Writing course which in many cases is the final high school step before entering the Running Start Program. Taking both this and the American Lit course help a student do well on the entrance test to Running Start. |

This course is designed to prepare the capable student for "college prep" high school courses. It builds on the skills mastered in the MS Advance course, taking the student to new levels in creative and academic writing, literary analysis, critical thinking, vocabulary, and oral communication skills. Literature selections include fiction, non-fiction, and poetry from both classical and modern periods. Vocabulary building is aimed at equipping the student for the PSAT and advanced literature. Pre Req: Teacher recommendation upon completion of MS Adv or teacher assessment for students who haven't taken MS Adv.. Notes: An “overflow section” may be added. Important literary works by American authors will be presented chronologically, focusing on key periods in American history as seen through literature. In this way, student gain a perspective of American history in addition to English skills. Writing assignments are designed to get students ready for Running Start and all facets of college writing by developing research skills, report writing, and oral communication. Essays focus on topics that can be used for college and scholarship applications as well as being literature based. College prep vocabulary and advanced level grammar prepares students for ACT and SAT tests. We also spend time talking about
world views to better prepare a students for secular school challenges. Pre Req: At least one year in a high school level English course receiving a C+ or better grade.
Notes: American Literature is a recommended part of the High School English curriculum and is required by most colleges for admission. Most students who take this course after taking the High School Concepts course score at the 100 or 101 level on the Running Start English entrance exam. |

Using the basic “canon” of American Literature for college-bound students as a springboard, this course will continue to develop the student’s critical thinking, academic and creative writing in various genres, oral expression through speeches and debate, and college-prep (SAT) vocabulary. A research project will teach the process of finding and organizing information, note-taking, writing a research paper with proper MLA citations and format (required in colleges, including Running Start). Literature will include short stories, articles, novels, and poetry, and speeches. Pre Req: Honors English Concepts or teacher recommendation. Notes: Students who have completed World History should consider taking this course in companion with U. S. History. |

“Oh, to be in England now that April’s there…” Why was Robert Browning living in Italy instead of his beloved England? Who is considered the second most important English writer after Shakespeare? What did C.S. Lewis consider valuable to one’s literary enjoyment? From Medieval to Tudor and Stuart through Romantic, Victorian, and Modern, the vast spectrum, richness, and impact of British Literature will be surveyed. This course will combine the enjoyment and analysis of classic literature with college preparatory writing: 1) Academic writing – genres, promps, diction, syntax, clarity; 2) Poetry and prose – explication, literary terms, metric forms; 3) Vocabulary – bi-monthly quizzing of words from reading selections and SAT lists; 4) Oral presentations – practice in impromptu, persuasive, demonstrative, multi-media; and 5) Research – websites, plagiarism, MLA form, presentation of findings. Lastly, the tone of this course will require responsible independence for students on par or ready to transition into a Running Start environment.
