This class is designed to introduce children to the wonderful world of reading and writing. We will unlock the doors to reading and find great wonders there. We will open the avenues of phonetically vowel and consonant sounds of the alphabet and proceed to form basic words to introduce parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Along this path, we will learn to create sentences and look for main ideas in writing and reading. We will sharpen our comprehension skills and then find ways to understand the ideas that are presented. We will have opportunities to express ourselves in creative writing and class discussions. |

This class paves the way for opening curiosity to reading that is more advanced. We will practice comprehension skills, critical thinking strategies, and arrange thoughts in order through fun ways and exercises. We will analyze short stories and predict the outcomes. Building on the former skills in phonics, we undertake blends, plurals, prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, and antonyms. We will launch writing ideas in journal writing and short stories and continue to encourage class discussions. We will also express thoughts in creative writing with a beginning level of evaluation of the skills used in their written work. |

Continuing the adventure in learning language Arts, this class will advance to reading and vocabulary with meaning and excitement through various thought-filled, critical thinking topics, stories, and novels. In writing, sentence structure and paragraph building will be learned, evaluated, and edited. More exposure will be given to types of writing such as opinion, definition, descriptive, and narrative. Through diagramming sentences, the students will learn new and challenging ways to understand the structure of sentences. This practice will be beneficial and a basis for learning a foreign language. An intense study of grammar is fundamental to this class as grammar is the root for the study of languages. Class discussion will continue to be encouraged. |

Students will learn through fun games and activities the basics of math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time, money, etc…) that will help them with their math curriculum at home and future math classes. A solid foundation of math facts and math skills is the way to succeed in upper math classes (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, etc.) so we will work on cementing those skills. |

Instruction is for kids ages 6 - 10. One parent is expected to attend. Younger siblings are welcome. Students with hands big enough to reach the holes will learn to play a soprano recorder. This is a general music class in which students and their parents can learn and practice the FUN-damentals of music. Students will learn to play a recorder, to sing, sight sing, and sing in parts, and use some basic rhythm instruments. Parents will learn how to use music to help teach nearly any subject. No grades are awarded. |

Sing and make music, even compose music to the Lord! This class will focus on ear training, voice training, and performance training through the use of choral literature from Renaissance through Contemporary Christian music. We will offer a concert at the end of each semester that will include smaller ensembles from within the group. Students may expect 1/2 - 2 hours of music theory homework and/or vocal practice each week. Fulfills 1 credit (one year) of Performing Arts if taken in grade 9 - 12. |

Parents are encouraged to participate! Learn to play a band instrument. I prefer to limit beginning students to these instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone. Students wishing to play percussion should begin on another instrument, or take piano lessons privately for the first year. Students will need to find or rent their own horn. Horns dug out of closets need to have maintenance performed on them. I can recommend a service. Students will need to purchase the beginning band book, Essential Elements 2000. These may be purchased wherever band insruments are sold or rented. Please purchase them together with practice CD's for your horn. Fulfills 1 credit (one year) of Performing Arts if taken in grade 9 - 12. |

We'll have you accompanying yourself on Christmas carols by Christmas! Learn basic major, minor, 7th chords in first position, basic strums, how to follow printed music, and some basic fingerpicking styles. Learn how to transpose a song to a better key for you, as well as learning how to sing along. Music for Fall will focus on Christmas Carols. Music for Spring will focus on the kinds of songs you'll want to be able to sing with a group of small children in Sunday School or in Vacation Bible School. Acoustic instruments only. Fulfills 1 credit (one year) of Performing Arts if taken in grade 9 - 12. |

EXPLORING SCIENCE for Elementary Students Instructor: Bash Grade Level 2-5 | Semester Course Fee: $150 Materials Fee:$25 | Course length: 1 semester Min/Max enrollment:: 6/12 |
Fall: Students will explore principles that God has set to govern the behavior of the their world. Students will be discovering laws of physics that impact their lives on a daily basis. They will experiment with the effects of gravity, friction, inertia, and momentum. They will construct airplanes to discover how the forces involved in flight interact. They will build model bridges and towers to discover some basic concepts pertaining to structural integrity. Students will experiment with magnets to gain a basic understanding of attraction, repulsion, and polarity. The class will include experimentation, observation, and some direct teaching. Spring: Some ecosystems and biotic communities of Whatcom County will be studied as we explore the interdependencies of organisms and their environment. Students will use observation, experimentation, modeling, and research to investigate plant and animal life cycles, classification, identification, biological processes, habitat requirements, and the impact they and humans have upon one another. The role of water in shaping terrain and habitat will be explored. Other topics studied will include; the water cycle, point and non-point pollution, erosion and sedimentation, water chemistry, macro-organisms, ecosystems, energy production and consumption. Wise use and stewardship of resources will be discussed. Each student will be encouraged to complete a field study project in their own yard |
