Starting with the elements of design, students will learn the rudiments of art vocabulary, art history and art evaluation from a Christian worldview. Projects will include drawing, painting, printing, clay and crafts. Activities designed to strengthen observational and drawing skills necessary for success in mathematics and science will also be included. Students will keep an art notebook. 2 semesters.

We will identify the biblical principles of design and providential purpose of art beginning in Genesis. Value, shape, color, space, line and texture will be introduced through observing and imitating creation. Class time will be devoted to using these elements in hands on experiences, original works of art (clay, pencil, calligraphy, paint, linoleum block prints, various crafts) and evaluating the works of master and contemporary artists. Students will keep an art notebook.

Foreshortening, shading, surface, size, overlapping, density and contour will be introduced through drawing exercises, DVD Instruction (Mark Kistler’s Draw Squad), practice and producing original works of art. Isometric drawing, alignment and landscape drawing will also be introduced. Students will keep an art notebook.

Fulfills: One half credit art if taken in grades 9 - 10.
